How Playground Culture Can Help A Child With Autism?
Playgrounds that include nature play is always good for any kid but when it comes to autistic kids, they are even closer to nature. Therefore, they enjoy the landscaping much more than the other kids and it can set a serene tone helping to calm children with autism. It does not matter for cheap playground equipment but quality needs to be retained well.
How To Build The Perfect Playground Environment For An Autistic Child?
1. Find a nice playground which is spacious and safe to use and then enclose it with a fence. Make a one way in and one way out with a closed gate.
2. The wide path in the playground will help the child with autism to understand the dynamics of the playground from a safe distance. Also this will offers a quiet space away from the action.
3. Find a playground with more muted tones rather than bright colors.
4. Identify playground equipments that your child enjoy and incorporate them with sand play, musical play instruments, water play and imaginative play with themed play equipment. It is important to have ample space for running and exerting energy in the playground.
5. Also avoid playgrounds that have a large module structure in the middle because it limits the line of sight.
6. Play areas divided into pods are helpful and consult with the designers to find only see through equipments, such as rope climbers and sliders that offers greater visibility.
7. Look for playgrounds with a lot of movement. Even small playground equipment enables children to spin, swing, sway, rock and jump, just make sure that the quality is intact.
A playground culture nurtures their social-shyness and lets them adjust to different people and personalities. Identify play activities that promote social play and it will help teach all children how to cooperate. The sensory rich playgrounds include different activities focused on the senses such as hearing and touch. Thus, helping them normalize their state.
